Mogadishu – The National Anti-Oppression Party has strongly criticized President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s recent decision to appoint the Election and Electoral Laws Committee, calling it a violation of Somalia’s Provisional Constitution.
In a statement, the party argued that the move undermines the Provisional Constitution, a foundational document designed to promote inclusive governance and support the country’s democratic transition.
“This decision represents a clear violation of the Provisional Constitution, which was established through consensus among Somali stakeholders to guide the country’s governance and democratic progress,” the statement read.
The party expressed grave concerns about the potential consequences of such unilateral actions, warning that bypassing constitutional principles and excluding broader political consensus could destabilize Somalia’s already fragile political landscape.
“Such actions risk exacerbating political conflict, undermining security, and delaying Somalia’s already sensitive electoral timeline. They erode public trust in the democratic process and threaten to reverse hard-won progress toward national unity and governance,” the statement added.
The National Anti-Oppression Party called on all political actors to uphold the Provisional Constitution and engage in inclusive dialogue to address disagreements. It urged the government to take immediate corrective measures to prevent further destabilization and ensure a transparent and credible electoral process that reflects the will of the Somali people.
The developments come at a critical time as Somalia strives to stabilize its governance framework and prepare for upcoming elections. Political observers have cautioned that decisions impacting the electoral process must be managed carefully to avoid deepening tensions in the country.
