Somalia have produced history after stunning Zimbabwe 1-0 in Djibouti on Thursday to snatch its first ever win in a FIFA World Cup qualifying clash.
Somalia lost a lot of opportunities which could make goals for them, mainly in the second half of the match during which Somalia was making successive attacks on their opponents’ goal.
Elman FC Striker, Anwar Sayid Ali’ scored Somalia’s late goal in the 86th minute of the match to register a maiden victory from a FIFA World Cup qualifying match in the country’s football history.
“I am very much pleased to lead Somalia into its first ever high profile win. Thanks to Somali Football Federation authorities for all the efforts they did. The SFF brought in some 12 football professionals who play in Europe, Canada, USA and Qatar and I am sure these players have made a big change that led Somalia to create this historic win” Anwar Sayid Ali, said after the match.
Grabbing a win from the first leg of the preliminary round of the 2022 FIFA world cup qualifier clash is a big advantage for Somalia against a big football nation which is nearly 80 places above Somalia.
Before the country descended into chaos in 1991, Somalia had participated in two FIFA World Cup qualifications and had never won, even when the country had a strong government and was one of the most peaceful countries in the world. In the return leg, Zimbabwe will welcome Somalia in Harare on September 10.
